7 Things Well-Groomed Men Are Doing This Spring

Winter has come, and let’s be honest, it’s basically gone. Across the country, we’ve been exposed to some bizarre balmy winter temperatures that many of the northern hemisphere country would embrace as their summer.

However, while you’ve been enjoying the warm days, your skin has been left slightly baffled, not knowing what to do while your beard start smelling like your neighbor's wet dog.

The first shift you need to take on skincare for spring? Adjust your grooming routine as temperatures change. As Spring is almost upon us (though it seems weeks early) we look at the best ways to prepare your face, skin and beard for the onset of glorious sunny months.

Check out our grooming tips for spring.

Grab That Tube Of SPF

If you want your skin to retain its youthful exuberance, then you should ensure you block out the sun and it’s damaging UV rays. You certainly don’t want to start looking older than your dad, so make sure you purchase a lightweight formula that will absorb quickly.

Moisturizing and protecting the skin, without clogging your pores is imperative, as is the SPF factor that protects your skin from sun damage from those harmful rays that make you look 63 when you are only 25, so make sure you get the best SPF men’s facial products this spring.

Don’t forget it only takes 20 minutes for unprotected skin to begin to burn, so a good SPF15 will block up to 93 percent of all UVB rays, while SPF50 filters out 98 per cent. And do not be fooled by the clouds, as up to 40 per cent of those nasty UV rays hit the earth and your face.

However, it should also be noted that a study conducted at the University of Southern Queensland found that a man’s beard acted as a barrier to the UV rays. If you have a beard around 9cm thick, it will provide an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 21.

The UPF system is used for apparel and determines how much UV can penetrate. A UPF of 15+ is considered good.

A great moisturizer to help protect your skin is Baxter Oil Free Moisturizer.

Exfoliate, Exfoliate!

No, it’s not the Daleks, it’s that dead dry skin left all over your face due to the transition from winter to spring, and it’s one of our top grooming tips for men. Because of cold temperatures and low humidity, your skin will have become dry and flaky in the winter months, as spring brings more humidity. So exfoliate, get those fingertips moving in small circles all over your face for these reasons with your upscale exfoliator:

    • Helps to get rid of dead skin cells, leaving softer, smoother skin.
    • Will brighten your skin tone, removing dark spots and dullness
    • Those massaging fingertips increase circulation which in turn is an instant pick-me-up for your poor skin, stimulating your scalp’s circulation to foster healthy beard growth
    • Less ingrown hairs making your wet shave so much more comfortable

Upgrading to quality products will make a difference and a good facial scrub will get rid of all those dead skin cells, clear up any blemishes and help to rejuvenate your skin. If you haven’t already, make sure you are exfoliating between once to twice a week as it will make your skin look super fresh. Not only this, if you are sporting a fantastic beard you don’t want beard dandruff for all to see, so prevent beard dandruff by exfoliating on a regular basis.

You Wouldn’t Wear A Heavy Jacket In Spring

So, why use heavy creams and lotions now that winter has gone? You should be swapping your grooming products to match the current grooming trends and practice for spring.

Use SPF-infused, lightweight lotions that are not grease top-heavy. Natural, lightweight moisturizers should replace those thick, rich ones which will feel too heavy as the months get warmer.

A water-based formula is key as our skin holds more water during the spring months than the winter ones. When it comes to beard care, you can certainly cut back on how much beard oil or balm you use, as spring will bring with it heaps of humidity.

You can use beard balm if you need extra hydration due to a drier, coarser beard, or if you need to define your beard’s style. Just don’t overdo it though.

The Bearded Chap Original Beard Balm will look after you.

Wash And Condition Your Beard

When it comes to spring grooming, beard care is important; you will find that as the air temperature warms up with the advent of spring, you create more sebum which can lead to oily skin and some odd beard odours.

Make sure you clean your beard once a day and combat sebum production with a beard shampoo.

Use beard products free of sulfates, as these will dry out your beard. Don’t forget to condition your beard too as this will relieve you of beard itch, prevent beard dandruff and combat flaky skin. Don’t forget you can also try a beard trim to cut back some of your winter growth.

Just Say No To Alcohol

Don’t panic! We’re not talking a tall frosted glass of Stone & Wood Pacific Ale, we mean alcohol in your products. If you don’t want dry skin to continue through to spring and summer, then avoid alcohol-based products.

Alcohol-Free Aftershave

A Lighter Smelling You

When it comes to choosing a fragrance for spring, look for notes of amber, citrus and hints of spices. Those heavy aftershaves and perfumes of winter can be put away for another ten months while you switch to lighter scents. Perhaps try something zestier, a calming fragrance, to compliment the season as you prep yourself for the spring.

Bright And Early!

It’s not only products that can be of benefit to your skin and beard. Don’t forget that a well-balanced diet and plenty of exercise can help keep you fit and healthy. Now that winter has gone, there is no longer an excuse not to get up early and off to CrossFit classes, grab your mountain bike to hit the trails or get in a quick 10km run.

Big hearty slow-cooked dishes are now gone, so pick up a great salad and get ready for summer.
