Barbershop Lingo – How To Get The Haircut You Want

Getting the perfect haircut involves more than just going to the barber and saying, ‘just make it a bit shorter, mate’. Especially if you’re sporting a style that takes a bit of finesse to pull off, or if your hairstyle has grown out a bit, it’s really important to know how to ask your barber for the style you’re after.

Now, we barbers may seem like magicians sometimes, but (believe it or not) we’re definitely not mind readers. There’s always a chance that a seemingly obvious indication from you about how you want your hair might still be misinterpreted if you don’t know the correct terms to use. And the last thing any barber wants is for you to be disappointed with your new haircut!

So have a read through this quick guide before your next trip to the barbershop. Your barber will be grateful for your clear instructions, and you’ll avoid that awful feeling of ‘haircut disappointment’ in the future.

LENGTH

Always be specific with your barber about exactly how much you want taken off each part of your head. What does ‘just a bit’ mean, anyway? If you’re not clear, how can we know? We understand inches and centimetres... just give us a number. If you’re unsure how much shorter you want to go, just ask for a small amount (say, 2cms) off first, see how it looks, and we’ll begin from there.

STYLE

If your hair has grown out of your preferred style, or especially if you want to try a brand new look, have a chat with your barber first about what you want. If possible, bring a picture or two of the style you’re after so your barber has a good idea of your wishes.

There are hundreds of style combinations you can go for. Here are some of the most common styles we get asked for at The Emporium Barber:

CREW CUT: This look is achieved with a clipper taper on the sides and back of the head. The top is either clipped evenly or tapered so that the front is slightly longer than the back.

COMB OVER FADE: This look is really popular right now, and consists of longer hair on the top of the head combed over or slicked back (your preference). The hair on the back is kept short with a gradual fade down your head.

HIGH AND TIGHT: This cut is typically really short back and sides (your preference over a taper or fade) with the top of the hair kept about an inch long and textured to your liking. It’s a really popular cut because it doesn’t require much maintenance.

TAPER OR FADE

A ‘Taper’ simply means that your hair length gradually shortens in length from the top of your head down to the nape of your neck. A fade is a bit more slick though – it’s achieved with clippers and literally looks like your hair is fading in thickness as it travels down your head.

NECKLINE

If you’ve got short hair, you have three general choices when it comes to your neckline: square, round, or tapered. Simple, right? Here’s a pic to illustrate:

TEXTURE

You have a few options here:

CHOPPY: This is what happens when your barber ‘point cuts’ your hair. Point cutting means that they will pick up the hair at different lengths and cut it at a 45-degree angle. If you are looking for more volume and texture, this is the way to go.

LAYERED: The layered look shows off longer hair resting on top of shorter hair. With thinning or balding hair layers can give you the appearance of depth or volume.

RAZORED: This look will help you flatten out curly and unmanageable hair by reducing its natural bulk.

THINNED OUT: Your barber will remove some of your thick hair’s volume by cutting some strands more than others.

Listen to your barber.

Not all haircuts will work for your face and hair type. Sure, you can take in a picture of Chris Hemsworth and get the same haircut, but it won’t necessarily mean you’ll step out of the barbershop looking like Thor.

Your barber will give you advice as you discuss your hairstyle. Listen to your barber – we know more about hair than you can imagine! Naturally, we want you to be happy with your hairstyle, so if something is simply not going to work well, we’ll let you know and work with you to find a great solution.

Are you ready for your next haircut? Book in at The Emporium Barber’s Brisbane or Fortitude Valley shop here.
